William Friar grew up near the banks of the Panama Canal. Though an American citizen, he has lived much of his life overseas. The others are an ecotourist guide, Adventures in Nature: Panama, and a photo-essay book, Portrait of the Panama Canal. He also writes about England, San Francisco, and various bits of South America.Bill began his writing career as a stringer for the metro desk of The New York Times, where he found that covering stabbings, shootings, blizzards, and hockey parades was surprisingly good training for travel writing. He has also worked as a rock music critic, technology news editor, human biology instructor, writing coach, fundraiser, software manual author, and reporter for three daily newspapers in the San Francisco Bay Area. His current day job is press officer for the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London. I took the print version of this guide with me to Panama last December, and I found it fairly useful, but with some gaping surprises. The coverage on Panama City's main attractions was sufficient, as well as those for the Canal Zone and Canal itself, where I spent all of my trip. I stayed in El Congrejo and and ended up using a lot of the restaurant and shopping recommendations while I was there. What I found a little odd was the safety precautions over Panama La Vieja and Casco Viejo. For example, in Casco Antiguo, I arrived thinking I needed to cautiously crawl from block to block and you really need a taxi to take you from spot to spot. This was ridiculous advice - this was one of the safest-feeling areas in Panama City with people all around, even during the night time, as it is one of the most popular restaurant/bar locations, too. Also, the area is not particularly large and you can cross the whole thing in 10 or 15 minutes, so I am not sure why one would need a taxi to be waiting to take them from spot to spot, especially since it can get crowded. On the flipside, Plaza Cinco de Mayo and Avenida Central are highly recommended with no warning whatsoever - what gives? This was the part, while interestingly gritty, that he should have very clear to leave most things back at your hostel/hotel and try to blend in as much as possible. So, while this guide overall gives some decent recommendations, some of the pre-arrival impressions it leaves are just not accurate, in my opinion.
I went on a trip to Panama for about a week in early October, and brought this book with me.I thought the book was great - I really read through it and brought it with me pretty much wherever I went out in Panama. The descriptions are really thorough and comprehensive, but at the same time it is filled with personal details from the author (spent part of his childhood in Panama).When you first get the book, it is somewhat daunting; there's a lot of information to digest at first, so it may seem overwhelming, but really it's an easy read, and once you actually get to Panama the content starts to make sense. The organization is sort of awkward; the majority of the book is broken up by region, but there is a section in the back that gives you overall tips for the country (currency, taxi, etc.), so don't forget to read that as well. The short spanish section in the back is also helpful. Even the maps were helpful - I actually used them to navigate my way around - since Panama is pretty small, this was feasible.Some improvements:- some things are a little outdated, but that's mainly with regards to the clubs/bars in Panama City - this book is from 2010, and things like nightclubs change all the time, especially in the city, so I don't really think it was that big of a deal, especially since you could go on the Internet.- As nice as the maps were, more maps would be great- Book is a little big, so kind of bulky to bring around with you if you don't have a backpack.
This review is for the edition published in fall of 2010. The guide book is a comprehensive look at Panama from an author who grew up in the country. That means the tone is a bit more opinionated than you might find in other guides, but there are also more insights into the culture and history of Panama. What's refreshing is that the guide avoids talking up or dismissing individual towns you may be interested in visiting. It's clear the author loves the country, but he's not really gushing like other guide book writers. He's nuanced when praising or critiquing a locale, which not only gives you a more realistic preview of different places, but also reflects realistically the way travelers tend to experience them.There are some minor flaws. The maps tend to be a bit off; the one for Valle de Anton has a place or two on the wrong street, and the scale doesn't seem right. In Panama City, the author's favorite restaurant, Siete Mares, is actually on the other side of the road. The restaurant recommendations generally are a bit hit or miss. The author writes you can go by taxi almost anywhere in the capital for $1 or $2, but don't be surprised if reality doesn't deliver those fares.Apart from things like that, though, it's a thorough, well-researched book. And again, the author's personal involvement with the country really makes it a more unique read. I chose this over Lonely Planet and would do so again.
Although it needs updating to reflect the Canal expansion, this is a well-crafted and skillfully written overview of everything Panama. From a former native of the Canal Zone, we learn what neighborhoods to stay away from, the interesting history of each region, whether the local beer is okay, and how the Panama national bird could eat the US national bird for lunch.

I bought two books about Panama for upcoming travels and this one is awesome. It offers different information from the other book and has some very easy tips and guidelines to follow when interacting with locals. Things I would have never thought about but am surely glad to know.
I haven't read the entire book, but so far I'm pretty pleased. I've been coming to and living in Panama off and on for the past four years. I like the way the book is laid out and it is easy to read. It seems to be pretty accurate thus far although places are always changing here in Panama. I would recommend this book.

Radin, who is himself one of the leading researchers in the field of psi and quantum physics, effortlessly trots the reader through research in such fields as retrocausality (something that hasn’t happened yet affecting the present), psychokinesis, clairvoyance, telepathy, meditation, etc. He also includes a rather brilliant discussion on the dogged resistance of the scientific community, and people in general, to change beliefs or their paradigm of reality, even in the face of overwhelming scientific evidence to the contrary. Radin’s book is not important simply because it brings to light the validity of extraordinary human abilities. Radin’s book helps move us along in the crucial understanding of who and what we really are, and how the universe really works. The more we understand, the more it seems that the sages and seers of old where right on track in describing a universe where all beings are interconnected and interdependent. This understanding and the accompanying change of paradigm is crucial for preserving our planet and creating a more sane, compassionate and peaceful world.

I believe these books, and especially Supernormal, is the perfect blend of spirit and science, a synthesis of ideas, evidence, common sense, experience, and hope for humanity. The books build overlaying information that drives home the main idea which is that it is okay to be both a bit fearful and utterly fascinated by the positive results of psychic research as we break through to a new age of understanding of our place in the universe and the universe's place in us--something that ancients may have already understood.
With this controversial book, Dean Radin presents the scientific evidence for an array of psychic powers, but he frames the discussion in terms of yogic siddhis. “Siddhi†is a Sanskrit term for an ability that isn’t seen among the general population--at least not reliably so-- and for the most part these “accomplishments†correspond to the categories discussed in parapsychology (i.e. telepathy, precognition, psychokinesis, and clairvoyance.) [Note: As mentioned, this is a controversial book. I will attempt to provide as unbiased a review as possible. I am generally skeptical, but don’t believe in poo-pooing the study of subjects because they offend my skeptical sensibilities. Furthermore, I try to keep an open mind because: 1.) there is no scientific consensus about what consciousness is or how it works, 2.) quantum biology is a subject in its infancy and we may yet learn there is more quantum “spookiness†going on in the brain than we think. 3.) for all I know we are in an simulation and then it’s all a matter of programming.]The yogic emphasis doesn’t change the book much from the pop psych literature review of parapsychology studies it would otherwise be, except to necessitate background information on yoga and siddhis. However, this emphasis may or may not have opened up a huge additional readership. Outside of a fringe, siddhis aren’t much in vogue among yoga practitioners these days. Among modern day yogis and yoginis, there are some who believe in them and some who think they’re throwbacks to an era of superstition, malnutrition, and wishful thinking. However, even among the former, siddhis are generally considered a distraction. The advice of most of the great yogis has been to not get lost in the pursuit of such powers because chasing siddhis can derail one from one’s ultimate objective (e.g. liberation.) Still, if even a small fraction of yoga practitioners take an interest, that’s a fairly large readership.So what exactly is the controversy? Obviously, there are many divergent demographics with differing views on the topic. For hardcore skeptics, parapsychology is right up there with alien abduction, bigfoot /yeti sightings, and the anatomy of the Loch Ness monster with respect to being a legitimate topic for scientific study. On the other hand, there are believers who are offended by the mere notion of studying such phenomena with science, and who say such investigations are an assault on their beliefs.But that’s not a very interesting controversy—i.e. there are some people who won’t believe in such abilities no matter what the evidence, and others who will believe in them no matter what science has to say. So let’s chop off the hardcore skeptics and hardcore believers and ask what the controversy is as it pertains to those of us who consider evidence when drawing conclusions.The root of the controversy can be stated rather quickly and clearly. Here it is: the effect size is small but statistically significant. What does that mean? Say this study asks a subject to determine which of five randomly selected shapes has been chosen using nothing but his / her mind. Using pure guessing, one would expect to be right 20% (i.e. 1/5th) of the time. If a person happened to get 32% right in a given trial, that means nothing because small samples don’t give one a convergence towards a mean value. (i.e. Intuitively, you know that if you flip a coin 10 times and get 7 heads, it doesn’t necessarily mean anything. If you repeat that 10-flip set 10,000 times, and still get 70% heads, then you probably have a trick coin or something else odd is going on.) So the issue is that even when experimenters repeat the experiment over and over again such that the average value should converge on 20%, it doesn’t. It stays at, say, 30% (exact effects vary but it’s on this order.)At this point the reader might be thinking of all the factors that could result in this effect (i.e. cheating [insider or outsider], subconscious observation of facial expressions, random selection that is biased, etc.) Well, so have the scientists. In any study, one wants to account for alternative explanations to the utmost. Over the years, researchers like Radin have put all manner of protections in place from quantum random number generators to booths with extreme sound-proofing and Faraday cages (prevents radio signals from transiting.) Still they get this small positive effect that can’t be explained by alternative explanations.There is also the issue of the filing drawer problem, which Radin devotes considerable space to discussing. It’s the idea that when drawing conclusions from many similar studies, one must accept that there may be many unpublished studies that sit in file drawers because they didn’t produced negative results. These filed / unpublished studies could negate the outcome of the body of studies of that nature. While this remains an open criticism, there is mathematics for determining how many negative studies would have to be turned up to make the results insignificant. Radin argues that the numbers calculated strain credulity.So this “small but statistically significant effect†is generally agreed upon by all, excepting conspiracy theorists. Now we get to the controversy, which is how to explain this effect. Skeptics run the gamut from hot-blooded haters who claim that it’s all just a scam perpetrated by hoaxers with tenure, to more diplomatic challengers who provide thoughtful, plausible, and non-nefarious explanations for what they believe are false results.
