Almost done. Can't put it down. I truly feel that if Don Winslow never writes another novel (God forbid) this will be the ones everybody will look to as his crowning achievement. He has taken a terribly complex 40+ year history of conflict and bad decision making by individuals and government and made it jump off the page. Like the Godfather by Mario Puzo, you try to figure out who each fictional character is in realityI noticed that in these 3 novels of which this is the last DW tries to tell a very long and complex tale as quickly as possible. This could have been twice as long easily. I found myself noticing that reading this was starting to resemble reading later James Ellroy novels. There is less room from fluff due to the scope of the story that DW pares back the descriptions somewhat. Don't worry, it's not Ellroy, just different from his other novels like The Force (2017). A worthy successor to The Power of the Dog and The Cartel.

Art Keller is back and he's being hunted... That's all I'm going to stay about the plot for fear of spoiling this fantastic book for readers, but I will describe my reading experience. Imagine treading water in the ocean, your heart is racing, your lungs are strained, and every time you come up for air you get just a little bit before you're slammed by another wave. That's how the Border made me feel.Hell, that's how the entire trilogy made me feel, and the Border is the best of them all. Easily the Ferrari of the series. Mr. Winslow ends things his way, and in a way that leaves the reader with a gut punch impression of what is happening on our border, and the truth behind the war on drugs. I started reading Mr. Winslow for entertainment, like many readers, but along the way I've learned so much about the southern border and what's really been happening for the past thirty years. Thank you, Mr. Winslow, for dedicating over twenty-years of your life to telling this story--a story that all Americans should read.

I have always loved Action-Adventure. Even when it stuffs a few dozen expletives, I plow through this genre so I can experience the action or enjoy the adventure. On rare occasions, however, such tomes will so vastly overdo the profanities that the action and adventure becomes lost in the forest of expletives. “The Border” by Don Winslow, for some, is such a novel.POV:-BLUSH FACTOR: With more than 400 eff words, I think it safe to state, you will not be reading this to your youngsters, your prayer group or to anybody else. There also are what can be regarded as crude sex scenes. Even if there were no profanities, you wouldn’t be reading this to friends and family.Well, if you will be, I don’t think you and I live on the same planet…WRITING & EDITING: Aside from the language, the writing is excellent. Short, snappy, easy to read. Further, and more to the point, the hero, Art Keller is the hero many of us aspire to emulate. He’s tough, smart, quick and, well, everything most of us are not. That probably explains why I continued to read this thriller despite any misgivings.Yes, I admit it, I am a hopeless throwback to our chauvinistic cave man days. Sentimentally, in spirit, if not in actuality.BOTTOM LINEGreat writing? No. But, for those who like this genre, it is a decent read. I’m actually between three and four stars.Three stars out of five.I am striving to produce reviews that help you find books that you want, or avoid books that you wish to avoid. With your help, my improvement will help you and me improve book reviews on Amazon. Together, you and I can build a great customer review process that helps everybody. Will you join me? It is people such as you who have helped me improve over the years. I'm still learning, and I have a great deal yet to learn. With your help, I'll improve every day.One request: Be respectful and courteous in your comments and emails to me. I will do likewise with you.Thank you so much for indicating if this review helped you, or for your comment. for indicating if this review helped you, or for your comment.

This conclusion to what was an exciting pulp romp through cartel culture is disappointing. Its plot is lugubrious. The first 50 pages are a slog, a mortal sin for any action novel. The main plot development is a micrometer thin disguised lefty fanboy fantasy attack on Donald trump. Yawn. Commercial tip: if you want to sell books, how about not alienating half your potential customers? Or is the frisson of self righteousness too irresistible?

A marvelous ending to the trilogy, bringing us to the current situation on both sides of the border: our heroin epidemic, corruption at the top in all political parties, disgraceful amounts of Americans in prison, shocking inequality and poverty, and tremendous amounts of money being made on it all. Meanwhile the poor have no health insurance, the middle class has it but it stinks and lacks mental health coverage. I could go on but a fictionalized account is more interesting . . . and that's what it is.End the failed war on drugs. Legalize all of it . . . it will saves lives and money and we can turn to healing the root causes of the pain that draws so many Americans to drugs.

What a major disappointment! The first two books in the series were quite good. I was eagerly awaiting the third. However, after the first 50-60 pages it became almost unreadable. Why is it that so many writers today feel they need to produce far left screeds masquerading as literature? The plot rapidly devolves from an interesting story about the Sinoloan drug wars to a scurrilous attack on the President and his family. Does the author really think that 1) the reader does not know who he is maligning and 2) if there was a shred of evidence that the Trumps were involved in the drug trade that this would not already be front page headlines in the NYT or on CNN? About half of the book is readable although the characters are mostly stereotypes apparently derived from countless B movies dealing with the drug trade. The rest can be filed under "far left sleaze" and hopefully soon relegated to Half Price Books bargain tables.
